MGX PLUS

Southland Media Systems

Motion Enabled 8/24 Bit Graphics for SBus Workstations. 24 Bit graphicsat an 8 Bit Price. See our website at www.slmedia.com for details. Thenew MGX Plus media graphics accelerator from Southland Media Systems,Inc., provides exceptional value to end users through the addition of"no-cost motion video" and 24-bit color. The 4 megabyte (MB) MGX Plussubsystem provides roughly the same 8-bit performance as the TGX fromSun Microsystems(TM) Computer Corporation at about the same price as a1MB TGX. However, MGX Plus users also enjoy the benefits of a full 4MBof display memory, 24- bit operation, and color space conversion anddynamic scaling of motion video at up to full- screen resolutions (e.g.,1152x900)-even in a SPARCstation(TM) 5 class machine. MGX Plus can serveas a standalone boot device, and unlike other 24-bit solutions (includingS24, SX, and Creator from Sun), MGX Plus allows multiple 24-bit graphicssubsystems to be added to a single SPARC(R) based machine. And MGXPlus's 24-bit color means that applications such as Netscape Navigatordo not exhibit the annoying "flash" seen on a TGX. Software. Softwareacceleration is included for all Solaris 2 operating system visualinterfaces, including X11, XGL, and XIL. Hardware "transparency" allowsexisting 8- and 24-bit applications to take full advantage of MGX Pluswithout recompilation or modification. Software enhancements enablemultiple MGX Plus 24-bit graphics subsystems to be installed in a singledesktop machine, with or without 8- and 24-bit frame buffers from Sun(TM)and Sun(TM) compatible vendors installed. Southland Media's innovativeemul8TM solution provides software emulation of an 8-bit frame bufferrunning on top of 24-bit hardware. The emul8 feature allows MGX Plus torun a diminishing pool of applications that erroneously assume an 8-bitvisual depth when running on 24-bit frame buffers, without penalizingevery buyer through the addition of extra hardware. In addition, theSunOS(TM) environment is supported through emulation of a Sun(TM) 8-bitframe buffer.
